Description

Hello there. I’m SilverEagle91. Yesterday was the conclusion of season 5 of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. In my opinion, it’s the best season of the show. I can find virtually nothing wrong with it. In any case, I decided to count down my 12 favorite episodes of the season. I chose 12 since that’s half the season if you count the two-parters as whole episodes. Anyway, let’s start.

12. Scare Master

Writer: Natasha Levinger

Date: October 31, 2015

Synopsis: “Fluttershy spends Nightmare Night with her friends.”

Kicking off our list is an interesting episode. Fluttershy decides to finally spend Nightmare Night with her friends, but finds it hard to do so. I can definitely feel Fluttershy's character evolution with episodes like this. She's known for having a reserved nature, so this type of plot fits her character. The Mane 6 could've been unlikable, but they stay likable since they try to help Fluttershy out. The Halloween mood is definitely strong with the activities and the atmosphere, especially the second half. The icing on the cake is the moral on respecting how some tbh he aren't mean for everyone, but your bond is still strong. Good job Natasha.

11. Heartbreakers

Writer: Nick Confalone

Date: October 24, 2015

Synopsis: “Applejack and Pinkie Pie spend Hearth’s Warming Eve together.”

Since Nick Confalone co-wrote the Fish Hooks Christmas episode that made my favorites list, that would naturally carry over to MLP. The Apple Family spends Hearth's Warming Eve with the Pie Family, who have an unusual method of celebrating the holiday. Some of the best Christmas episodes have a strong sentimentality to them, and this is no exception. It's essentially a clash of ideals, but it works due to the characters. Applejack and Pinkie Pie just want everyone to have a good holiday, so they stay likable. There's a bit of strange quirkiness with how the Pie Family celebrates the holiday. The moral on respecting tradition propels this into my favorites. Good job Nick.

10. Slice Of Life

Writer: Mitch Larson

Date: June 13, 2015

Synopsis: “While the Mane 6 fight a monster, everypony is preparing for a wedding."

This is definitely something everyone would've put on their list, and mine is no exception. It's definitely an interesting way to celebrate 100 episodes. The main plot involves everyone in Ponyville preparing for Cranky and Matilda's wedding, which was scheduled for the next day. There's naturally a lot of nods to the older audience, but at no point did I think they were "in your face" with them. It actually manages to tell an engaging story with everyone preparing for the wedding. We have Lyra and BonBon going through personal issues, Muffin (Derpy) trying to put things together, and much more, but Cranky and Matilda are the stars. It all ties into a nice moral on how everyone has something to contribute. Good job Mitch.

9. Amending Fences

Writer: Mitch Larson

Date: July 4, 2015

Synopsis: “Twilight returns to Canterlot to make things right.”

I present the "Pinkie Pride" of season 5. This episode is about Twilight returning to Canterlot to make amends with her old friends, specifically Moon Dancer. Moon Dancer is like Twilight in the early days, but is different enough to be distinguished. She essentially feels betrayed when Twilight didn't come to support her, so you can understand her motivation. Twilight actually does try to make things right, so she stays likable too. There's some nice emotion and plenty of fun moments. It all ties into a nice moral on being more open to others. As you can see, I like it.

8. The Lost Treasure Of Griffonstone

Writer: Amy Keating Rogers

Date: May 23, 2015

Synopsis: “Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie get called to Griffonstone.”

I wasn't sure which map episode to put, but I decided on this one more for what it represents then what it is, but it's still good either way. Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie get called to Griffonstone, which is in shambles, and have to help out the griffons there. Just like "Heartbreakers", this episode is also a clash of ideals, but I like this one more mainly due to the deep themes and the adventurous tone. It's essentially a clash between logic and faith through friendship but it works due to the setup. Pinkie Pie likes to look on the bright side while Rainbow Dash looks at the situation for what it is, both of which make logical sense. We also see more of Gilda's character and how she became what she is. It all ties into a nice moral on how friendship can help get through tough times. Nice job Amy.

7. Canterlot Boutique

Writer: Amy Keating Rogers

Date: September 12, 2015

Synopsis: “Rarity opens a shop in Canterlot.”

I'm not sure why the season was split in half, but at least the second half starts off pretty well. This episode is about Rarity opening a boutique in Canterlot, but she's forced to work under Sassy Saddle's rules. A lot of people wanted to see how Rarity owning a boutique in Canterlot would turn out, and this episode does the job. We see she likes to make fashion, but not under a super strict rule. Sassy Saddles is a jerk, but with good reasoning since she also wants the business to be successful. The cruelty works since its self inflicted, and the humor and music tie things together. It ends on a nice moral on how you run a business according to your standards. This isn't the last Amy episode on the list.

6. Rarity Investigates

Writers: Meghan McCarthy, Mitch Larson, Joanna Lewis, Kristine Songco

Date: September 19, 2015

Synopsis: “Rarity has to clear Rainbow Dash’s name.”

This episode has the most amount of writers for any MLP episode, and it works well here. Rarity and Rainbow Dash are in Canterlot for a special air show the Wonderbolts are holding. Rainbow Dash gets accused of sending Spitfire on a wild goose chase, prompting Rarity to investigate. We essentially have a detective story set up in a "film noir" style that's actually pretty fitting with Rarity's character since she can get flamboyant in her style. She actually does prove to be a good investigator with the various methods she used to find the culprit, which are pretty hilarious. It all ties into a nice moral on trusting other people's strange methods. I think it's pretty good.

5. The Cutie Map

Writers: Meghan McCarthy, Scott Sonneborn, Mitch Larson

Date: April 4, 2015

Synopsis: “The Mane 6 arrive in a village where the ponies don’t have cutie marks.”

I think :icongoldenfoxda: put it best in his review that it's certainly different from other two part episodes, which works here. The Mane 6 are called to a village run by Starlight Glimmer, where everypony has a black symbol on their flanks instead of cutie marks. It turns out that Starlight believes that individuality from cutie marks causes conflict and thinks everyone can be friends through equality, which makes them unhappy. This special is essentially a clash between individuality and sacrificing freedom for security, which works here. We've seen in both other episodes and this episode the benefits and disadvantages that come from both freedom and individuality. Starlight Glimmer may be a hypocrite, but she does bring up legitimate points and actually seems to believe in them. It's essentially the themes of the episode and the creepiness that put it on the list, along with the humor and music. The moral on how individuality helps you make friends is a powerful one. It's pretty cool.

4. Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep

Writers: Jayson Thiessen, Jim Miller, Scott Sonneborn

Date: July 11, 2015

Synopsis: “The Mane 6 try to help Luna catch a dream monster.”

Scott Sonneborn is currently a story editor on Pickle And Peanut, which is a bit of a shame since his most recent episode is pretty good. In this episode, a dream monster gets loose, prompting the Mane 6 to help Luna out. Dream episodes are a lot of fun because of the creative scenarios, and the humor and animation really shine in that aspect. This episode would still be good regardless, but there's more. It turns out Luna felt guilty for the terror she caused as Nightmare Moon, which shows why she's a good character. There's some disturbing scenes that work for drama and a good moral on forgiving yourself. Good job Scott.

3. Crusaders Of The Lost Mark

Writer: Amy Keating Rogers

Date: October 10, 2015

Synopsis: “The Cutie Mark Crusaders unexpectedly help Diamond Tiara.”

No list would be complete without this episode. At first it seems like the plot will be about an election, but there's actually more to it. This episode is essentially the deconstruction of Diamond Tiara, and it's wonderful. We see more of why she became the way she is, because of her parents. That's pretty interesting. Plus, she does own up to her deeds and become friendlier. Since the CMC actively try to do the right thing no matter what, they manage to stay likable. It all ties into a nice moral on doing good for others to make friends. It also helps to strengthen the ending where they get their cutie marks. It's definitely a good way to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of the show.

2. The Mane Attraction

Writer: Amy Keating Rogers

Date: November 21, 2015

Synopsis: “Applejack worries that her old friend, now a famous pop star, is being misled by her manager.”

On my list for 15 favorite Sofia The First season 2 episodes, I put "Sidekick Clio" at number 2. Since this episode follows a similar plot, it naturally would occupy the same spot. I'm not sure what else to say, but I'll try. This episode is about Applejack reuniting with her old friend Coloratura, nicknamed Ra Ra, only to find she's pushed around by her manager. Ra Ra is like Clio in that she's not an idiot. She's simply misled. Plus, she stays likable with her kind and gentle personality. It also manages to show how much fame can change you and how you shouldn't let other people push you around. That's pretty much the icing on the cake, especially since Ra Ra stood up to her abuser. Since this is Amy Keating Rogers' last episode before going to Disney, she left on a high note, and will be missed.

Before the number 1 pick, here are my honorable mentions: Castle Sweet Castle, Bloom And Gloom, Tanks For The Memories, Brotherhooves Social, The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows, The Hooffields And McColts

And my favorite episode of season 5 is

1. The Cutie Re-Mark

Writer: Josh Haber

Script: "Starlight Glimmer returns."

When a show takes an epic plot, and goes above and beyond, it earns the number 1 spot on my list, and the season finale is no exception. In this episode, Starlight Glimmer casts a spell so that Twilight never met her friends. Now she has to fix things before they're too late. The stakes in this episode are the highest the show has ever taken since we see how one friendship ripped apart can cause a big impact. We also get to see more of Starlight Glimmer's background and why she's all about equality by taking a dictatorial route. Let's just see she's more sympathetic. It also teaches a valuable moral on how strong friendship is, and how acting like a friend can make a big difference. Good job Josh Haber.

Thanks for reading. Have a good day.

I still wish that the scene in the thumbnail image for this article had Twilight say something like this:

"Where are we? Don't you know? Look around you, little filly! This is the world where you won! This is the world where everypony is equal!"
